In my opinion, Disney unfortunately portrayed Hyenas to the uninformed masses as the 'cowards' [Lion King etc]
The perception of many today is also that the Hyena is a weak hunter on its own
While it preferred to not waste energy and to eat /steal his food from others's kills, they are also fearsome hunters who chase down and kill a lot of their own prey.
They are definitely not 'HELPLESS' and depending on the other predators catching all their food.
They also do not live only from 'scraps' out there, though they do fulfill an important role in nature by 'cleaning-up' all the left-over carcasses [together with jackals and vultures etc]
An animal that deserved to be treated with respect....
Being killed by hyenas would be a horrible death ,though as most of the times it implies being eaten alive !
That is true nature and is happening every day--even today...

Can they be domesticated? One of those laying in the driveway would be a deterrent to trespassing
