Which gun would you prefer to have if the apocalypse happened
As WhiteBear said, that's a hard call, and should vary on a person's locale, and just what kind of an event caused the problem. Different weapons have different uses.
Here in the desert of southern New Mexico, there aren't many game animals to hunt within 100 miles, so opting for a .30-30 or .308 might not be the best choice, but for others in a more hunting friendly area, like the Pennsylvania woods, it may make more sense to keep a useful rifle that can put food on your table and be used for defensive purposes. A 7.62 semi-auto would be my preference.
For folks in a more urban setting , a defensive pistol may make the most sense, as it's unlikely that they will be trying to drop a whitetail in downtown Detroit. Without trying to reignite the age-old caliber debate, my suggestion would be either a 9mm or .40 S&W.
For my situation, in my opinion, what makes the most sense is a self /homestead defense weapon, most likely either an AR Carbine or an AR pistol in 5.56 or maybe 9mm or .300Blk. I have never used a 9mm or .300Blk AR, but I can see where they could be useful. I know myself well enough to know that if I had an upper in .300, I would eventually accidentally try to put a .30 caliber projectile down a .22 caliber barrel. For that reason alone, I have never messed with .300Blk.
Located in central Alabama, we're mostly what I call "semi-urban." Drive a few miles and it changes from farmland to woods to city then back again. For walking conditions (haha) my immediate AO is small town surrounded by farmland. I'd choose a 9mm carbine and a matching pistol (KelTec Sub2k w/S&W MP9, for instance) as my daily carry. If only one is available, I can handle either within 25 yards with confidence. Small neighborhoods, country roads, and 34k population for the town would make it sporty enough but not need anything heavier. Everyone over 10 yrs of age has a hunting rifle and these days many will have an semi-auto rifle of some sort, so that would keep most people "polite."
