Do you guys want to get this thread back on track? Go make fun of me in the everyday thread if you want. Graywolf started a good thread to help people get going on their own blog or website, but someone new may not want to wade through all the BS.

I do appreciate the help Graywolf and I did enjoy the article. As it stands, I am checking out some different domain names and discussing some different options with a couple of folks and will have some more questions for you within the next couple days. One thing I am looking into now is pen names. (There is something else for you guys to go to the Darkside and make fun of) When buying the domain names, do you have to use your real name, or can they be bought under a pen name? Also, can they be bought and have the information kept private? AmericanBTGoG, was thinking that by going through someone like GoDaddy a person could choose the option of having the purchasers personal information kept private and should someone need to get ahold of the domain owner, they would need to go through GoDaddy. Does anyone have any information or experience in this regard?

Don't look at me, I was being serious when the idea of a bar-bar-2 website with Tex merchandise popped into my head.

And to answer some of your questions, Tex:
Yes, for domain purchases, they can be bought under your own name, an LLC or a pseudonym, just so long as there is a credit card to pay for the registration each pay cycle.

Same with the purchase of a server. You necessarily don't need to purchase both from the same company. You can get the domain registered with godaddy or verisign or whatnot and the server hardware from Turtle Solutions or a company in the Bahamas for all that matters. You just have to link the IP address of the server hardware to the domain. Once that happens, it takes anywhere from a few hours to a day to propogate the DNS (Domain Name Service) info to all the ISPs out there. Until then, the server could be accessed via the IP address rather than say bar-bar-2-ranch.com

On the private registration thing, whois allows people to look up all the vitals on a site. For instance, angeryamerican.net:

*PS, everything in red is stuff I needed to change for the sake of security for the big boss.

I would recommend paying a little extra and getting a private domain. It really does work. When I was running my forum, we had a guy that was suspected of being a fugitive. The federal agency that was after the guy could not get my contact information without a subpoena so they actually created an account in the forum and left a name and phone number for me to contact them at. Before that incident I was not sure that the system really worked but evidently it works rather well. If someone comes up with a warrant or subpoena the company providing the private domain is required to turn over the information. I expect that a domain registrar in another country would go a long way towards making it more difficult for anyone to get the contact information....

I certainly don't mind. The information is useful to pretty much anyone. I do believe we're not making fun of AD enough in this thread though so we'll have to spend a little more effort on that.

The information posted in this thread has been very useful to me and has proven how easy getting this type of thing going. It's still way above my level of comprehension, but it has helped me to figure out the right questions to ask so I can then go to Graywolf and Kelly for my answers. It is nice to have friends who are skilled in this sorta thing so that I may be able to continue on in my ignorant bliss.

Tex and others on this thread. All sounds good on making the site. But it will take a mod team eventually, rules and you'll have to admin it. Sometimes that is the hard part once it is started. I wish you well if you start this site, Tex, and I'd like to read it. I am not here as much as I'd like, but I do like reading around here. And do decide if you're in it to make money, or to make enough money to keep the site going so the information gets out. There is a difference. Many members do not like a site that is there for the making of money, but many don't mind if the Site Owner makes enough so they can participate on the web site.

For those of you who've started your own prepper/homestead/survival/whatever website and would like some additional income on it, Media.net has a bonus right now if you use the link below to sign up. They're paying 10% extra for the first month right now (just started today).
                    Just use this link: http://www.media.net/join?af=5735&pr=45

What they do is allow you to put some code on your site and that code shows up as an ad for people to click on. They're much better at it than they used to be.

I use it on my websites. It's not a ton of money but it wouldn't take too long for it to pay for more than just your hosting every month. I tried them out to see how well they'd do and they pay more than the others I was using so I dropped those and went with this group.

It's just one of many ways to bring in a few bucks here and there.
