Its actually very easy. There are some tools you need that you can probably borrow from folks around you.

Brownells has a grat video guide that i used for my first build.

The good thing about building your one is that if something goes wrong, you know everything about how to fix it

My first build took about 4 hours. Build #4 took just over an hour.

I bought all my tools off of amazon and a few punches from Harbor Freight.

Your local ffl should only charge you ~$25 for the transfer. Find a shop with a gunsmith so that you can have them torque/time the barrel nut. Thats to only tricky part but it can be done on your own.

Here is another thought. Depending on where you live, you could find a lower recvr on a private sale (if its legal in your state)and not need the FFl to transfer.

Then just but the Brownels kit which ships to your door with out the dealer getting invloved


In AZ we have backpage and pvt sale are legal as long as you are not a prohibited possessor and we can buy lowers without paper.

I am in wyoming...everything is legal here I would prefer a private sale...I like to avoid being on lists.

I just talked to my sheriff friend and he said he had all the tools...he offered to just put it together for me...but I think this might be a valuable thing to do.

Perfect. Have him walk you through it. The kit is a good price. You can add a fore end rail system later.



Look at putting an add in the paper for a lower. All AR -15 lower/upper are Mil Spec meaning the part should all be interchangeable.

Buy the kit and wait for a lower to come your way.

I build AR15 and 10 buy picking up parts when they appeared and waited until I had it all and then started.

Or buy a lower and build and then look for a complete upper.

Many ways to get it done.
