Man I long those summer Camps!
I was involved in its equivalent for more than 20 years in South Africa
We taught the youngsters anything from abseiling, obstacle courses,shooting with gun,handgun and bow,cave crawling with only a candle, mud-baths etc to build character,leadership,survival,respect,nature conservation etc,etc.
They were positively transformed individuals when they went back to their schools ready to take up their school leadership responsibilities
Here is a photo of one such a group of happy 13 -14 year old after a 4x4 short solo drive in a Jeep and a mud-bath afterwards.....
Aah,those were the days my friend....

Welcome aboard..It's always neat to learn about other continents through the 'regular' person's eyes. If you haven't met him yet, there is a member here from Australia. Going Bush is his handle. Fairly similar to your situation as far as interaction with the wild. VERY interesting stuff.. I look forward to reading your posts....
