  • Question regarding social media

Years ago, I was an early adopter of a number of social media platforms. Privacy concerns really bugged me and I removed myself from all of them. I removed every post, every picture, every like, upvote, etc. I still have an account with no content on many of them because my kids and grandkids are on them all the time. It’s really the only way to find out what’s going on in their lives. We see each other and talk and text constantly, but I miss out on pictures and seeing them enjoying time with others if I delete my accounts all together.

Even with Angery American, his is the only page I follow on Facebook. Mainly because he is much more active there than he even is on here. LOL, that alone probably puts me on some list.

My question is this: At this point in time, is it worth attempting to hide from the spying? If you have a smart phone, you are tracked, your content is collected, it is shared with companies and governments. Outside of going completely off the grid and living as a hermit in the mountains, you can’t avoid having your security and privacy compromised.

I have content to share, value I can add regarding my work skills and experiences I’ve had. But if I don’t use social media at all, I can’t share my experience with anybody.

    Your thoughts?

It's a tough balancing act, isn't it? It sounds like you and I are pretty much inline with each other. I do have a TraceBook account that I log into about once every month or two, just to see if the world still exists, and to see what AA is up to. I have an account with some of the other popular platforms, but have never posted anything in them. I might log into them once a year, if that. My thinking is "Just because some information is being collected about us, why make it easy by giving them ALL of my information without a thought"

This place is my online outlet, primarily due to the refusal of the big wigs to allow or accept advertising. Even here my participation has severely dropped off. Shortly after this board was first created, it wasn't uncommon to have 60-100 new posts a day. Obviously, we're not near that anymore.

Haha, even here I rarely post. 4 posts in 2 years. I read everything though. That’s about to change for me I hope.

Even as a non-posting member of those sites, YouTube and Facebook keep track of every article or video you view and build a profile from that. Facebook will even have a profile on you if you have never visited their site. They base it off of info friends and family have put in. It’s scary how accurate it is too. I’m really close to just giving up trying to hide.

ProE- Your not going to get away all of it, but you can make it harder from them. I use a browser that has a VPN , facebook my know its me but my location is consistently changing every visit. If I want to search for answers on things I would rather the feds don't see. I use Tor Browser for those inquiries .

RD, I completely 100% agree with hiding location. I would never post public anything the feds would be interested in. Haha, I’m more worried about posting something my sweet mother or wife would raise an eyebrow at. I may be dang near 50 years old... but I don’t go pissing off mama.

There are so many logarithmic tracking methods available now that even with VPN and tracking turned off, "They" know who you are, where you are and as scary as it may be can predict with a high degree of accuracy what you are going to say or do in a given situation, a lot of times before you do. "Off grid" is no longer possible while maintaining anything like a normal day to day existence. Even if you were to dump all your tech move to a random location and maintain a cash only lifestyle your past habits can be used as predictive indicators to track you down.

Now why anyone would want to track down a shot out old Marine is what I really need to ask. Why are "They" going to come after me? Because I said mean things about them on Facebook? They're going to have a lot of people to round up. At this particular point I don't think dissent is considered suspicious activity but attempting to hide has become the allegory of malicious intent. Trying to be unseen is making "Them" look at you.
I'm much more a proponent of the greyman theory, hide in plain sight be so normal as to be invisible.

Remember, liberalism and socialism can't exist without a boogeyman, if they had no wolf to point at, the sheep simply would not need them.

Although I do use a VPN, in all reality, the thing that would probably interest the Feds the most about me is my Bread recipe. It's pretty good.

My bread is so good that you would likely charge me with an attempt to bribe just for offering it.

Mmm...black bread. Goes great with garlic shrimp.

I thought about creating a Bread Thread, but just figured that it would bore our members. Any interest? I make a couple of loaves a week and usually switch it up a bit. Some come out great, others, well, we call those "experience".
