For that matter, sneaking through Sea World only to find the rotting and seagull picked corpse of Tillicum and Namu in the big tank

Florida: hurricanes, fires started by strong thunderstorms. Or alligators coming to get lunch rather than being lunch (I am in book 3, and they just went down the river and back). Sink hole? And maybe even the desperate eating those that die of starvation to keep from starving. Just a few of the things that I could see being somewhere in the series.

And I just thought of flooding if there was a hurricane somewhere near that location.
