I've been thinking on this and its always been kind of unclear. Why the huge push for amnesty? I don't think the the rising Hispanic demographic is a valid answer. The Hispanics in the United States are not a monolithic bloc, either with regard to political outlook, with regard to perceived relations to other Hispanic or Latino nationalities, or with their concern for illegal immigrants. If we look beyond the constant thumping of the drums by agitators for illegal immigration, I believe most Hispanics/Latinos identity themselves by national origin, and not by common language. At the end of the day, a Puerto Rican is a Puerto Rican, a Cuban is a Cuban, and a Mexican is a Mexican. Same as "Europeans" who self identify as Poles, British, Italian, etc., rather than as a (metro) European.

Other reasons have been served up. For, example, the normalization of illegals' status would be a boon to the Democratic Party. I think that's true, but I think that also puts way too much credence to the idea that either of the major parties engage in truly long-term planning. I believe the major parties are into smoke and mirrors, and patching up the leaks as they occur, so that the individuals in power will stay in power, with all the perks and privileges inherent thereto. A 92 year old congressman or senator wants to remain in office, not because of their determination to serve the nation, but because they need to be part of the club with the power over others. There may be a few exceptions in our recent history, of someone actually staying in office to preclude the election of someone they perceive as harmful, but no one of this quality comes to mind (even among those who I disagree with).
