  • Bombing range?

    Where's the bombing range?

I've been looking at a map of Florida till my eyes got crossed and cant find the bombing range anywhere near Ocala.

Don't have the book nearby, but if memory serves, the reference may be to the the old facility in Brooksville. Mostly only remembered by old-timers, except when unexploded ordnance is uncovered, you won't find it named on a map. After WWII, it became Hernando County Airport.

While I think that's the location referred to in the book, considerably further south of Ocala there's the large and still operative (as far as I know) Avon Park Air Force Range, as well as a closed range in Osprey.

Anyway, its there somewhere. AA knows all, sees all, and remembers all.

    BTW, welcome to the monkey-house.

I thought it was off 19 near Howey In The Hills.
You're still walking free. Enjoy it while you can.

If I remember correctly, the bombing range is outside Ocala.

You won't find the B-17 base (gone years ago and now a few houses and pasture) on a map here in Bushnell, FL either, but it used to be buzzing with them and some B-25's and 26's and P-38's & 47's so I hear. Still see some of the metal grid runway (too sandy I guess here) scattered here and there.

Here's a list (Wikipedia, though) of Army Air Force Airfields in Florida.

I have an old map from when I used to live in Jacksonville.

I've been to the prison a few times as a guest Chaplin. Didn't get to do much sight seeing.

No, sorry for the confusion. As I zoom into Pincastle on Google Maps/Earth, not only is there "GO USN" spelled out, but so is "FRED".
