      • I have no idea what the bite force of a hyena is, but those jaws would put a pit bull to shame'

        • Redman2006, for sure!
Hyenas take down their prey by chasing and tiring it before grabbing with their powerful jaws and bring it down with their brute strength. ...
Hyenas have a jaw strength of 1,100 psi while lions have a jaw strength of 600 psi.

Humans have a max of 150-200 psi biting force

The average bite strength of a dog turned out to be 269 pounds of pressure.
The Rottweilers were the strongest and topped with 328 pounds of bite pressure.
German Shepherds came in second with a 238 measured bite force,
and the American Pit Bull Terrier came in third with 235 pounds of pressure.

            • ....a good head lamp...

Does anyone have experience with a good strong head lamp?
We hunt [legally] problem animals at night on foot eg jackal, bush pig ,spring-hare and porcupine-mostly without dogs.

Especially the very aggressive bush-pig could be dangerous if you do not have enough light though

The porcupine are ok if you can just see what is going on at night and keep out of the way of those foot-long quills--sometimes with thick dust as well that play havoc in torch ligt!.

As such, a good bright head lamp [hands free] that is better than the small one's used for camping etc is a must.
I ordered this one from your neck of the woods ,and am interested to know if anyone here had any experience with one?
Danforce, LED 10 000 lumen for 2-3 hours, water resistant and on low beam a battery life of about 7 hours

I will be using this one during our winter in a couple of months and will then put mine to the test.
The initial testing in and around the house are very encouraging.

                            • Noice! I miss getting out hunting. Here in Southern New Mexico, big game consists of Deer (mostly Mule with some Whitetail), Elk, Turkey and Bear. I also have a fairly unique opportunity for a "Once in a Lifetime" hunt for Oryx in White Sands Missile Range (WSMR, pronounced Wiz-Mur)
My problem is that everything except Oryx is up in the mountains, and my prosthetic doesn't have an "ankle", so ascending and descending inclines, like mountains, is rather difficult.
I could apply for Oryx, but there are so many requirements & restrictions that it just doesn't count as "hunting" to me. It's a draw hunt, and if you're drawn, you must tell them what weekend you want to hunt, MUST hire an approved guide to take you onto WSMR, who will then take you to where the Oryx are, and will even tell you which Oryx to harvest. I guess that's alright, if you have a bunch cash, and don't mind the farce of it all. I will say though, Oryx is damn fine eating! I've only ever had a roast that was given to me, but it put beef to shame.
The government wants to keep all Oryx on government property, either WSMR or Holloman AFB.

There are exceptions and off-range depredation hunts to keep the off-range Oryx population at a minimum, but that truly is "hunting", and my leg just isn't up for that. All of this unfortunately means that my hunting days are over.

                              • Oryx/Gemsbok hunt

                                kickstand-
Yea, Oryx ,or as we call them down here 'Gemsbok' has some of the finest meat!

Here they are mainly desert dwellers in the wild. [Sand dunes or rocky desert---hot and dry places]
What still amazes me is when you encounter a small herd while travelling on the small 2-track dirt roads, is that they will start running at a good speed along the vehicle, and without looking, NEVER-EVER slip or stumble on the millions of loose football size rocks on the ground!

I hunted mine in Namibia in the hot rocky desert with very sparse vegetation and with patches of desert sand in between.
It was really very hot with temperatures in the 40 C during the mid-day as only a wild uninhabited and isolated desert could be, while during the evenings back at camp, it was freezing cold with temperatures below 10 C!

We were a group of 4 hunters that hunted Gemsbok and Springbok [Impala] solo after being dropped with an old Ford F100 pick-up deep in the desert before sunrise and then being picked up again at night at our different indicated spots far from each other with our bag for the day to go back to the small camp more than an hour's drive away.

Here we process the meat ourselves, chat a bit around the campfire about the experiences of the day and then after a camp dinner, tired after the days many kilometers walking and stalking and carrying the hunted gutted animals back in the heat to the pick-up point, fell into a dead sleep until starting again before sunrise the next morning with sweet hot coffee and a lot of rusks for energy for the day.
Our 'food' for the whole day [with water] were only a couple of oranges and some biltong [jerkey][no mobile-no signal, really out on or own!]

You will never guess that only a couple of hours before this photo was taken, I hunted my Oryx solo only in shorts, hat, sandals and t-shirt with only my 30-06 BRNO de Lux rifle, S.A.K Huntsman pocket knife ,small fero-rod , small pocket camera and water-bottle stalking him for 3 days in the heat of the desert....WHAT A HUNT!!

That 10 days hunting trip was a very unique hunting experience in my life who has only had a lot of Bushveld and Savanna terrain hunting experience at that time!
