  • Tastes like pheasant. I have a half dozen of them on the ranch. They are loud...and mean, I watched them chase an owl off the other day and the dogs and cat won't even make eye contact with them.

    • I gave ours away. They insisted on roosting on the back porch and pooping on the goat milking stand.

I just recently saw a photo of an elephant carrying a lion cub in its trunk, with the claim that the elephant was saving the cub from exhaustion. Unfortunately, evidence shows it was photoshopped in 2005, a total fake, so I won't be posting it up. It did look impressive.

🤔The itching of just sitting still the whole day in the hotel room during day 7/14 quarantine has resulted in a bit 'creative' thorn arrow point fastened with a fire-hardened plastic bottle rope and some red nylon string using only my SAK pocket knife🗡
                  ---just for because!😎
I think this type of set-up with these mostly picked-up materials could maybe have some real-life applications as well?

                  • Those look quite similar to contraband we find in the prison. I've always said inmates will do quite well in a SHTF scenario, they are very adaptive.

                    • Make Reed/Bamboo blades without a steel blade?

Reed "blades/points" got many 'survival/bushcraft/hunting applications after you shaped them as eg spear/arrow points and even some traps etc.with my pocket knife as I did in this case

I used the cutting blade and the little saw on my e/d.c. S.A.K. here just to tinker a bit.
Reed products can be best made with your steel knife, depending on your situation, location and intended use. ,

Secondly, without a steel blade its a bit more difficult to work with a hard reed for sure, but by rubbing the reed against a suitable stone or rock, it can be shaped into a nice cutting blade as well.

Thirdly, without a steel blade or rock available, it becomes increasingly more difficult to use reed ,but it's still not impossible.
For a reed knife to skin and butcher an animal, you actually need only very thin strips of labour finger breath of lengthwise broken reed. The reed can be beaten as is or with a rock/branch etc on the ground till it split, or it can be broken in the fork of a tree etc.
Palm length splinters on average is ideal. Care must be taken though, as the splinters will mostly be double edged and very sharp. So the "handle" part had to be made blunt to hold on to.
Also, as the 'trigger finger' will be used to push down on the blade top for better control during skinning and cutting, that part of the reed must also be dulled.

So one of the biggest 'problems' with a reed blade is NOT so much to sharpen it, but to 'blunt' part of it so you don't accidentally cut/hurt yourself while using it!

Reed and even more so bamboo are excellent resources to learn and utilize in nature for blade/cutting related purposes apart from their many other uses.

On youtube survivalists [with no steel blade available] can be seen in the survival series 'Alone-the Beast' using only a single reed/bamboo stem, and after crushing it on the ground, got enough "blades" out of that single stem to process a thick skinned 5 ft crocodile! In another episode another guy processed a whole wild boar, also with just a reed! Both animals have very 'thick' skin [hair/scales] ,as opposed to some antelope or rabbit etc!

These reed blades are sharp enough to do the job, and when they became dull, some fiber/hair can just be pulled lengthwise from the cutting edge to sharpen it again, or it could be swapped for a fresh piece of sharp reed splinter!

So to answer the question, yes, reed can be utilized without a steel blade, though it will be more difficult, that's why it pays to sometimes from time to time just "play" around with a piece of reed to get the hang of it.

But I am sure there are many knowledgeable friends here that can add more advice?🗡

                      • 🗡And this boring compulsory 14 days quarantine hotel's cheap and flimsy takeaway dinner plastic knife and fork is not really working for me, so what other choice did I have, but to become a bit 'creative' and replace it with D.I.Y. crafted reed replacements....??🤔😁😁😎
I sneaked out to the cut a piece of reed in the corner of the hotel garden and then started 'working' inside the hotel room on it just to shorten the long hours in 'corona' isolation!

                        • Africa's biggest organized crime dictatorship?
ALL the borrowed R500 BILJON covid-19 relieve funds are 'lost ' in only 3 months! [March-May 2020]
The scale of corruption in the high government and their families 'tenders' is staggering as NONE of that money even reached the 'lower' levels of government to be distributed for medical relieve aid or even to be looted by the 'small fish'!
NONE of the intended serious medical need patients or hospitals saw a single cent of it!
It took only 3 short months to loot ALL of that medical corona money 'without a trace’!
You can NOT explain it away, no matter what stupid political rhetoric [racism, apartheid, blm, closed schools, socialism, weak economy etc] you try to use on tv ,as we, like the world, are NOT stupid and can see clearly through all your fat smoke and mirrors.....
Overladen black taxis mini-busses mafia are ok but small businesses, hunting, wine and other industries, surfing in the sea/beach or restaurants etc are not?
How on earth do you logically explain THAT unintelligent line of thoughts?
[And the 'investors' whose money it is smile, as they now got an even better grip on the country for their own evil agendas!]
You know, our grandchildren or even their children are still going to pay dearly for all of this countries money stolen in only 20 years from mandela by the biggest crime organization in the whole of Africa masquerading as a [dysfunctional] 'political' party/government!
But then you can track somebody without a medically unsafe 'mask', or selling cigarettes etc but you are not able [capable?] to follow all of this mountains of stolen money???
[Maybe it's because those living in glass houses cannot afford to throw rocks?]
You and your unholy cronies will burn one day for letting your very own people suffer and die without the needed [available!] medical help just to satisfy your own criminal greed!
R 500 BILJON in only ONE short looting spree!
PROOF me wrong and I will maybe apologize if you will.....

                            • We kind of have that fantasy here as the our indigenous tribes and what they owned and when , all that was in flux for hundreds of years .
The word 'indigenous' refers to the notion of a place-based human ethnic culture that has not migrated from its homeland, and is not a settler or colonial population. To be indigenous is therefore by definition different from being of a world culture, such as the Western or Euro-American culture. There is no people in the world that can say we've been here on this land since the beginning of time , that's a dream .

                              • You have fancy names like Antifa, Liberals etc etc for the wrongdoing going on---here the same actions are committed by common brutal criminals!
In SA the terrible scope of corruption ,looting, crime , political intolerance and government mismanagement is mind boggling and seems like a mad feeding frenzy.
People murder, steal and plunder at a rate not comprehensible , and law and order is only a pretence on tv and a wishful dream for the majority affected.
Known [illiterate?] thieves sit in parliament and make laws so that they can steal more.
It really is the biggest organized [proven] crime organisation pretending to be a [failed] political government in power now!
It seems unstoppable at this stage,as those in power is not [capable?] interested in a calm law abiding society!?
